Chinese New Year: JAN 27
January 24, 2017
Welcome to the year of the rooster! The Chinese new year celebration lasts from January 27-February 2. Roosters are hardworking, resourceful, courageous and talented according to this culture. New year’s eve dinner may include dumplings, new year cake, tang yuan rice balls, and laba congee. YELP has some great Chinese restaurants for you to enjoy in San Jose too. Decorations, red packets with money, and fireworks are also popular traditions. The holiday, like many holidays across the world, start wit the myth of wild beast Nien (which also is the word for “year”.) It appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. Loud noises and bright lights were used to scare the beast away, and the Chinese New Year celebrations were born.
